In Review: Love + Leche

I am, if ever there was such a thing, a perfect candidate to tell you all about the benefits of a great lotion bar. I spend my days alternating between my work — laundry, dishes, more laundry, gardening, and the perpetual handwashing that is parenting — and play, which pretty much always involves knitting and spinning. I have literally gone months where I am forced to bandage certain fingers because the skin is constantly ragged and it interferes my craft. My life is hard on my hands and even harder on my skin.

I had mostly resigned myself to a life of band-aids and occasional overnight moisture treatments because I found regular lotions were always messy and never absorbed quickly enough for me to use them when I needed them most — when I had wool & fiber in my hands. Last year, however, I was introduced to lotion bars and I knew I’d found just what I needed. For those who haven’t heard of them, lotion bars are just what they sound like — lotion in bar form. Unlike traditional lotion that comes as a liquid in a bottle, lotion bars are solid bars that when heated slightly by your hands allow you to smooth a small layer of moisturizer over and into your skin. So thankful to have found them, I’ve become somewhat of a connoisseur of lotion bars.  I’ve found each brand has a very unique personality and today I have the great pleasure of telling you about my latest acquaintance in the world of lotion bars, Love + Leche.

Formerly Milk + Honey (you can read about the name change here if you’re curious), Love + Leche is at its heart a business that grew from roots on a small farm outside of Santa Fe where goats were milked by hand and honey was collected from the family beehive. Today, ten years later, having grown much bigger the business may involve more people but the values and principles remain the same. You can read their story here or — better yet — check out this short & very sweet video.

I got my very first Love + Leche lotion bar about a week and a half ago — I always build in time on the front-end of reviews so that I have ample chance to get to know the item I’m reviewing. So for the last 10days or so I’ve been using my Love + Leche lotion bar in the lavender-rosemary scent.

IMG_9869If you’re like me, the first thing you’re probably thinking is: “What on Earth do lavender & rosemary smell like together?” Well, I’ll tell you! My impression is it has that up front, clean scent of lavender with a deeper, lingering rosemary undertone. It’s a scent that covers all the very best olfactory bases, in my humble opinion. I will admit at first whiff I was a little worried it would be too strong for me, but once on the skin the scent is very understated.

My lotion bar literally has four ingredients, the first of which is pure beeswax and really, that’s all you need to know about how it feels on your skin. It is very rich when you first put it on, but it’s readily absorbed by the skin and while it isn’t greasy at all, I certainly felt a near instant change in my skin. As soon as I put it on, I can feel that my skin is softer and any dry, worn areas are much smoother. It’s that magic that is beeswax hard at work! I have really fallen in love here with the simple, pure little luxury that is the Love + Leche lotion bar.

Now there’s no time during the year that I use lotion bars more than during the Tour de Fleece and that’s why I was so excited to try the Love + Leche lotion bar out during this year’s Tour. What’s more, along with this review I have a sweet coupon to share with you!
