Artesian

I received Rosemary Hill’s Artesian pattern as a surprise gift. I had it on my wish list and one morning I woke up and someone had gifted it to me. I do this random act of pattern gifting from time to time, but I am always surprised when someone does it for me. From the moment I got Artesian I wanted to knit it in a stashed skein of Dyeabolical’s Strong Arm Skinny in the Nehi to a Grasshopper colorway…

I had dreams of this gorgeous purple shawl and I could not wait to start it. And then when it came time to wind the skein, I had a last-minute change of heart and grabbed my skein of Dyeabolical’s Tenacious Sock in Kara…

I don’t know why I changed my mind. It could have just been the grey skies and rain of March. Or maybe it was that name ‘Artesian’ that made me lust after the cool blues of a bubbling spring. Whatever the case I went with it..

And it didn’t take me long to know I was going to be really happy with the results. It’s true, this one took me a few starts before I was really and truly on the road. It’s not that the pattern is all that hard once you getting the hang of it, but it took me a bit to get my head wrapped around where it was going. By the time I was nearing the end of the final repeat of the main chart, I knew I was going to be in for a little yarn chicken…

In all honesty, part of me hoped I’d run short so I could order another skein and just max this shawl out in size.

Alas, I finished with plenty…

I had a whopping 9yard remaining — not even close to running out even with that stretchy bind-off!

And after a nice, intense blocking complete with a light starch spray as instructed in the pattern, I had this…

I am 100% smitten. I just don’t know that knitting results get a whole lot better than this.

Welcome to my wardrobe, Artesian. I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other.

  1. I love this shawl! Everything about it is luscious! The pattern, the yarn, the color, the drape, and oh yes – the model, too! I think I want it in the purple. Or maybe the blues. What about a green?

    • Thank you! And my daughter does have crazy hair. Not exactly the best job styling it for this photo shoot — it’s very high maintenance! — but still unmistakeable.

  2. Ooooooooohhhhh I love it!!!!! I feel like I need to make one. It’s sometimes hard to find patterns that play nice with variegated yarns, but this is scrumptious!!

    • This pattern would be AWESOME with any variegated yarn. It’s a little bit of work with adding and taking out markers, but I really had fun with it. I totally want to make one in the biggest size!
