Yes, it’s true that the Socks with Sarah knitalong has been going like gangbusters since its start on January 15th. I think we’ve all learned a ton and enjoyed the camaraderie involved with the experience and — day by day — those socks are getting done.  From its inception, I’ve been planning something special for the month of May for the group. Since we are winding down the first quarter of our knitting journey together, I thought it’d be a good time provide some fresh inspiration and incentive. Whether your first four months have been wildly successful or a little underwhelming, now’s your chance to re-light the fires of motivation and keep your Socks with Sarah dreams alive.

Here’s how this special event will work.

The Socks with Sarah May Challenge will run from May 1 – May 31. Participation is totally voluntary — Socks with Sarah knitters can just keep knitting as normal for the KAL or choose to participate in the challenge. It’s up to you. What’s the challenge? Simple — just try something new! Since it’s a sock knitting knitalong, this something new will have to be sock-related, but other than that you get to choose your own challenge. For me, I’ll be working on knitting a pair of socks for each of my kids (I hang my head in shame to say it has never been done before…).

Other examples from the top of my head are…

– try a new cast-on or bind-off

– choose someone new to knit for

 – spin your own yarn to knit into socks

– try a new yarn or pattern or needles

– teach a friend to knit socks

– design your own personalized socks

– give 2-at-a-time sock knitting a try

– learn magic loop

– take a sock knitting class

The  possibilities are endless. My only recommendation is that you try something you are really excited about. Remember the point of the May Challenge is to spark some inspiration and kick-start your motivation — no better way than with a fresh, new something that you have been dying to try. Whether or not you choose to place a timeline on your ‘something new’ is completely up to you. As with the theme of this KAL, success is not measured by quantity or speed but with finding a way to fit (fresh & exciting) sock knitting in your life, so the scope & timeline of your challenge is unique to you. The requirement is that you try something new — I’m not using the word finish because I want this to be as laid-back and undaunting as the KAL itself!

In order to officially qualify for the giveaway prizes for the May Challenge, all I ask is that you write & share a simple post about your chosen challenge — What did you choose and how did it go? Include a photo and/project link if you like.  Then post your entry in TWO places — once in the Socks with Sarah Main thread & once in the Socks with Sarah May Challenge Entries thread  — the former so that we can share the experience & talk about it and the latter simply so it is easier for me to use a random number generator to select prize winners. Please only post once to the Entries thread.  As with the FO Catalog, please no chatter in the Entries Thread! Oh, and feel free to add the hashtag #swsmaychallenge to the established #sockswithsarah tag when tagging (not required, but it’s definitely encouraged!).

Oh, and what about prizes? Well, I’m delighted to share that thanks to our generous sponsors we have over 40 prizes to giveaway for participants. I can personally attest to the fact that each item in the giveaway is special & wonderful & of great quality. In many cases I’ve personally purchased goodies from these shops — that’s how awesome I think they are! 1. Wow, those prizes rock! Wish I could force myself to enjoy knitting socks, but I’ve tried so many times (& knit many single, lonely socks). What an awesome month for the KAL! Have fun, knitters!

    • Just wait until you see exactly what those prizes are!

And while I totally respect those who don’t want to knit socks, I will mention that perhaps a go at 2-at-a-time knitting would be worth a shot (if you haven’t gone that route yet…)!

  2. Wow!! What an wonderful challenge! (Only exceeded by the awesome prize list – can’t wait to see the actual prizes!) I’m in…. Hm…..what to do?????

  3. I may have to try my first sock darning experience. My first pair of handknit socks for me just developed some holes >.<

  4. my current socks ARE something new – I just hit the colorwork section a couple weeks ago and it’s my first colorwork in socks – but i’m bogged down in it and slogging through very slowly. Maybe it would be good to take a break from that and find another new new thing lol maybe I’ll cast on my first sport weight socks…

  5. Okay, I think you’ve tipped me over the line….I’ve been telling myself I should try 2-at-a-time, oh but I love my DPNs…….so now I will give 2aat a go. Thanks Sarah, and well done you for creating such a great sock KAL community.

    • I LOVE my DPNs, too, but I find it really nice to have the option of 2aat once and a while, so having that technique in your toolbox will be great for you. There are just certain times & certain socks that are a little easier 2aat. Enjoy! And THANK YOU for being a part of the sock KAL community! I just set it up — it’s the people in the group that make it great!

  6. I’m doing top down two at a time on two circulars. I love love knitting socks and this is my second pair! I do think I like it better than the dpns though. 🙂

  7. sounds like a really good fun adventure! shame i’m too taken with the exams, otherwise i’d give it a go and try knitting my first socks!
    amazing prizes too 🙂

  8. Hello Sarah, I guess I really don’t understand what I need to do, should have asked this quesiton first. I do knit socks, I am in the middle of completeing a pair right now, do I just enter this project somewhere? I’m a little confused as to what to do? Thanks
