Viola Overboard

Why wasn’t this Viola Overboard on my list? Oh geez… here I go again…

Deep Breath.

And today’s topic.

From the time the Socks with Sarah KAL was but an idea in my mind, I knew I would want to offer at least one or two giveaways. I offered giveaways in the Merry KAL last year and it was my experience that they have a great effect on the spirit of the knitalong. They are a wonderful way to keep a group together for a full year — lending incentive to check back in, maybe throw in a challenge to encourage anyone who might be burning out to try something new, and really they just put everyone in a great mood. Seriously, who doesn’t like the prospect of winning a prize?

The Merry KAL was a smaller group, so the giveaways offered were put together by yours truly and my co-host, Martine from iMake — from our own resources. At the start of the year, I thought I’d probably just do the same for the Socks with Sarah KAL. You can imagine that when it kind of took off and more and more wonderful folks continued (and still continue) to sign up… well, my giveaway planning had to change dramatically. After all, it hardly seemed like fun or good incentive to offer 2items for 160 knitters! And I certainly could not afford to supply appropriate prizes on my own for a group this size. Thus began my mission to seek out sponsors.

I have to say, I’ve been really, really, really lucky.

I’ve been writing this blog for a few years, more seriously for the last year and I have some of the most wonderful contacts around, but before Socks with Sarah my circle was somewhat small. For me to email some of these shops & ask for giveaway items or a coupon code was pretty intimidating for me. There have been those who haven’t been interested or who haven’t gotten back to me, but I’ve been so humbled and impressed by the folks who have responded. Their generosity and willingness to contribute everything from yarn to accessories to coupon codes to patterns to support — it’s just been a wonderful experience with such a gracious group of people. As I said, I’m so humbled at their willingness to support our knitalong.

I’m also ecstatic. Ecstatic because as I’ve gotten to know more and more knitters involved in the knitalong over the last 2months (did you know tomorrow is our 2month anniversary?), I’m getting to understand the amazing human beings who are knitting along with me. Supportive to their fellow knitters, always encouraging and helpful, and just so incredibly inspiring in their knitting talents and their attitudes. Everyday I log onto Ravelry, read the threads, and I smile. It’s for that very reason that I’ve been working so hard to find sponsorship to get some awesome prizes and promotions for the group. And I’m over-the-moon at what is coming your way from our fab sponsors throughout this year.

For now, you’ll have to take my word on the fabulous-ness of what’s to come, but for those who are antsy I will share that our first giveaway will take place during the month of May — I have it all planned out and will be putting finishing touches on the details over the coming weeks. I encourage you though, that as you find yourself in need of supplies — “need” being such a wonderfully subjective term here — to please check out a special thread I’ve put together over in the Friends of Knitting Sarah Ravelry Group — the Socks with Sarah Sponsors thread. This is a list of shops who are supporting the Socks with Sarah KAL. They might be supplying items for giveaways, offering special promotions like coupon codes, allowing me to create tutorials of their patterns, or just lending general support to me for this KAL. On the thread you’ll find I’ve included links to their online shops where possible as well as their Facebook pages so y’all can stay up-to-date on their latest news. If you have the opportunity to pick up their lovely wares at your local stockist, of course that is great, too.

As you can see, the list contains some really fantastic shops. It’s kind of e-x-c-i-t-i-n-g! Perhaps a little browsing, a little dreaming, and a little shopping is in your near future? I know just where you should start…

For anyone who might be interested, I will be accepting new sponsors for giveaways, coupon codes, and other promotions throughout the year. Socks with Sarah has knitters from countries around the world and would love a wide representation! Big or small, I am happy to discuss options for participating as a sponsor with any shop. Please contact me directly at   knittingsarah [at] gmail [dot] com  if you would like to contribute.

    • It always surprises me when someone congratulates me – I feel like I am very much a part of a group. I focus on finding ways to inspire and make knitting fun for myself and others. The fact that there are sponsors for the KAL attests more to the fact that so many awesome knitters have joined me. 🙂

  1. Congrats, Sarah! I just knew that your socks KAL would be a smashing success! It has helped me make knitting socks an everyday happening. It is amazing how the socks grow with just a little attention each day. It’s a great KAL even without “goodies,” but what fun they add. Thanks for straying a bit out if your comfort zone to make it all happen!! You’re the best!

    • Thanks! It has been a little overwhelming, but I’m so happy to be able to share this journey with so many lovely knitters! Well worth the effort!
